The song says, “Love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage!” As we are in the ‘carriage ride’ of marriage, the romance must always be nurtured or it will be left by the wayside amidst the stresses of life. It takes a lifetime of commitment to abandon all others and cleave to your spouse.
In my book, God’s Design for Marriage, I share the three sides of intimacy. The word intimate in today’s world assumes physical involvement in a relationship. Yes, the gift of sex is God’s gift to marriage, but it is only 1/3 of the intimacy that is needed for complete fulfillment of marriage that I describe as passion.
Emotional intimacy and spiritual intimacy will produce passion. Every woman I know desires to be connected with her husband emotionally. She wants to know what he feels and thinks about life. She wants to share her feelings and thoughts with him. As the husband is to be the pastor/priest of the home, it thrills the wife’s heart when her husband takes leadership in sharing times of prayer and reading the Bible together with the children.
When both husband and wife are willing to invest time in and with each other to develop emotional and spiritual intimacy, they are erecting healthy boundaries around their marriage that leads to passion and a guarantee against an affair. What better gift can you give to your marriage and children?
Yes, affairs happen – they are usually not planned. It’s the lack of planning and working on the marriage that creates the open door for Satan’s foothold of dissatisfaction. If God is first in your life, your spouse second and your children third, your life will be blessed. Romance will be ignited when you follow God’s design!
