Father’s Day can be a troubling emotional day for some. Not everyone is blessed with wonderful memories of a loving caring father. Some fathers were physically present, but emotionally absent. Some fathers were abusers. Some fathers abandoned their families. All of these examples can create an unhealthy concept about God. If you were unable to trust your birth father, it can cause a distorted ‘Father-God’ concept.
What is God’s truth? God is love! His loved us before He created us. God so loved the world that He planned from the foundation of the world to come in flesh as our redeemer. His love for us is unconditional. His love for us is not based on our performance. God is our Creator and then became our Savior through His death on the cross. Our value and worth comes from God alone. We are His royal priesthood, His holy nation and His special treasure.
God wants to heal our ‘father’ wounds. God will never leave us or forsake us no matter how we feel. God lives in us through the baptism of His Spirit. We are the temple (dwelling place) of His Spirit. God will never abandon us. When we replace the negative thoughts from the past with God’s truth today, God brings healing to the wounded heart (Roms. 12: 1&2).
Many people who have a salvation experience have this emotional battle. The devil delights in destroying people spiritually and emotionally with painful toxic thoughts from the past. We can renew our minds through applying God’s truth to change the way we think. The secular world calls this cognitive behavioral therapy.
We define cognitive as our thinking processes. Behavior is how we act. The therapy that I use as a Certified Pastoral Counselor is the Word of God! When we are able to replace toxic thoughts with God’s truth, we are transformed. It is a process. It takes someone who is determined to grow and heal spiritually, emotionally and relationally. I have witnessed this process of miracle emotional healing for 24 years!
